Traveling with a dog can be stressful, make sure you research airline policies, book in advance and follow the right precautions to ensure your dog arrives to your destination safely. Here are some tips to follow to make sure you’re ready for the big move.

Documentation: Airlines typically require a current health certificate before allowing pets to fly.  Make sure to visit the vet and have the appropriate documentation required.

Airline policies: The Department of Agriculture sets regulations for the transportation of animals, every airline has its own individual policies regarding crate requirements, cabin restrictions regarding breeds.

Book in Advance:  Most airlines only allow one or two dogs on each flight. Don’t book your ticket until you call the airline and make sure your dog is allowed on the flight and that they have confirmed availability.

Fly Direct: Book a non-stop, direct flight whenever possible and try to fly on a weekday when airports are typically less busy. If your pet will be traveling in the cargo hold, it’s best to fly in the morning or evening during the summer, and midday during the winter to avoid extremely hot or cold temperatures.

High quality crate: Pets are usually stressed out when separated from their owners, which causes them to try to chew or claw their way out of cages leaving their teeth and nails bloody.  Make sure to secure the crates door.  It’s best to purchase a crate or carrier with holes for ventilation. Carriers must be big enough for your dog to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. If the carrier does not permit him to do this, the airline will refuse transport.

Tags: Don’t forget to write your dog’s name on the carrier and include identification tags with your home address and phone number as well as the address and phone number of someone who can be reached at your destination.

Eating:  if possible feed your dog about four hours before the flight to avoid a full stomach and an uncomfortable ride. Continue to give him water right up to the time of travel. If you’re checking the dog, leave the dishes in the carrier so an airline employee can provide your pet with food and water in the event of an extended delay before or after your flight.

Arrive Early: Arrive at the airport early, and have your dog’s health certificate ready. Most airlines recommend arriving two hours before your flight when traveling with a pet. Passengers with pets must check-in at a counter; curbside and self-service check-in are not allowed.

Don’t use sedatives: The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends that you do not sedate or tranquilize your pet before flying, as that can impede respiratory and cardiovascular function. Sedation can also affect balance during turbulence or rough handling, resulting in injury.

Arrival: When you arrive at your destination go for a long walk before you check-in at the hotel. Your dog will need to stretch and will feel more comfortable as soon as they can see and smell their new surroundings.

According to Toyota Hawaii, there are possibly 13,000 Toyota and 170 Lexus vehicles affected in Hawaii.

Local car dealerships throughout Hawaii have been bombarded with calls by nervous customers inquiring about their vehicles.

Kailua-Kona has a few charging stations however they only allow a car to travel about 15 mile. This makes it difficult for electric car drivers to get around the island since it is so large.

The new station will allow vehicles to be charged much faster. It will allow cars to go 60 miles after being plugged in for only an hour. It has been installed at the Shops at Mauna Lani.

drunkdriving

Federal safety regulators are working on technology that can be used in cars to detect alcohol by touch and breath, in order to reduce alcohol related accidents.

Nat Beuse an associate administrator for vehicle safety research at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said the alcohol detection technology is one of several systems his agency is studying.

Little is known on how it would work or which suppliers are involved, but Beuse believes an alcohol detection system integrated into vehicles would reduce the number of accidents and fatalities caused by drivers under the influence.

Throughout the last couple of years NHTSA has been making efforts to advocate technology solutions in response to the numerous accidents caused by drinking and driving.

The agency states they were awarded a $2.2 million contract from safety products supplier Takata Corp. to develop a device that can measure a driver’s sobriety.

The technology is still being developed and hopes to be available for implementation by 2018.Federal officials are unaware as to how the device will work. If Alcohol is detected, the vehicle could possibly be disabled or an alert will be issued, the decision is still undetermined.

Google Conference

Recently automakers have been integrating touchscreens into vehicles for safety reasons. Tech companies have been designing safer ways for customers to stay connected to their favorite apps behind the wheel. Google’s Android is working on a platform called Android Auto that allows maps, music, and personal phone functions to be accessed through a larger screen in the car which is their response to safety precautions.

Patrick Brady, Google’s director for engineering of Android, says, “You get the best of both worlds. You get the connected apps and services on your smartphone, with the physical controls that were optimized for driving in your car.”

Many drivers struggle with their phones while driving since the screens are too small and the interface and menus are complicated. “We had to take an experience that was designed for a smartphone and break it down to its bare essentials,” Brady says.

Android Auto will encourage a more convenient driving experience. The system allows quick voice based access to Google maps, text messaging, and apps like Google Play Music. It will be fully compatible with the dials, knobs, and buttons on your dashboard and steering wheel. Since everything you see on screen is actually directed from your smartphone, Google says the in car experience will be even better.

So Far Nissan Europe is the only company to explore Ultra-Ever Dry’s automotive applications. There’s no word on if or when it will be offered elsewhere.

  • Their largest recall of 92,022 vehicles, involves the Ford Taurus, Lincoln MKS and Police Interceptor sedans.
